Diabetes is a chronic, incurable disease that occurs when the body doesn't produce any or enough insulin, leading to an excess of sugar in the blood.

More than two million Canadians have diabetes. By the end of this decade, it is expected to rise to three million. The financial burden of diabetes and its complications on people with the disease and on the Canadian healthcare system is enormous. The personal costs of diabetes may include a reduced quality of life and the increased likelihood of complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation.

To date there is no proven way to prevent type 1 diabetes; however, the onset of type 2 diabetes may be prevented or delayed, through increased physical activity and diet. Taking these steps now can lead to a healthier future.

Courage, strength and heart. Three traits inherent to every young adult battling cancer. Alli Shapiro, founder of Alli's Journey, embodied just that; courage and strength in her seven year fight with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and heart as she lived with this disease using humour, humility and belief as her strongest weapons. Unfortunately, Alli succumbed to her disease in July 2006.

Alli Shapiro represented a segment of the population that is struggling with cancer in various forms and degrees of substance. Inexplicably, young adults aged 18 to 35, represent one of the largest segments suffering from Lymphoma and statistically cancer is now the leading cause of premature death of young women in Canada (Cancer in Young Adults in Canada, 2006).

Young adults' concerns and issues are different that those of other age segments and they need to be treated differently. They need to communicate with others who can relate as they live their life as a cancer patient.

Alli's Journey is a charitable organization (Charitable number 80 6478373 RR001) that focuses on raising money for education, research and support for young adults, ages 18 to 35 with cancer, no matter what form.

Achilles Track Club: This international organisation encourages and trains people with various disabilities to participate in running with the general public. To learn more about Achilles, please click www.achillestrackclub.ca or call (416) 485-6451.
